Stem cells are used in regenerative medicine therapies and are widely known as an interventional strategy that introduces new stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. Current studies are researching how stem cells may be used to prevent or cure diseases and injuries such as Parkinson’s disease, type 1 diabetes, heart disease, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s disease, strokes, burns, osteoarthritis, vision and hearing loss. Today, we want to share some scientific news regarding our own stem cells, so we all can make healthier lifestyle choices.
A recent study to determine the link between drinking and cancer shows that alcohol consumption can cause irreversible genetic damage to the body’s reserve of stem cells. The research, using genetically modified mice, provides the most compelling evidence to date that alcohol causes cancer by scrambling the DNA in cells, eventually leading to deadly mutations. During the past decade, there has been mounting evidence of the link between drinking and the risk of certain cancers.
The study, published in the journal Nature, focused on stem cells within the blood, which the body relies on to continually supply fresh blood throughout life. In mice that lacked natural defenses against alcohol, their ability to produce fresh blood was completely destroyed after being given diluted alcohol for ten days. Sequencing the genome of the stem cells showed that their DNA had been scrambled to the point that the cells no longer functioned. The team now plan to investigate why drinking is linked to certain cancers but not others. Even though scientists are still unsure how exactly alcohol causes damage to humans, the study provides very strong evidence that an alcohol metabolite causes DNA damage to the all-important stem cells that go on to make tissues.
